Hi Peter,
Simply had to call my boat, which is number 3186, Aeronaut when I looked up the roots of the word in the dictionary - an Aero sailor - perfect for me! see link below

RS Aero Cherished Names - February 2022 Update

Over 600 happy RS Aeros now have their names recorded on the list with many new ones since the last update!

Many RS Aero owners are coming up with some imaginative names for their beloved craft! This ‘name register’ is for general interest and to make it possible, although not vital, to avoid repetition.

RS Aero owners can post the names of their RS Aeros as a reply to this Forum thread and they will be added to the periodic updates. [Register to the website in order to post to the Forum]
Minimum info is sail number, country and boat name (but feel free to tell the story if there is one!). You could also easily add an image too!

Periodically this list can be updated from the Forum and saved to the Class website documents page. So let your imagination go and post up those names. Your RS Aero deserves it!

How about naming it 3456 or Easy as since the numbers are in sequence. I also always like Rowdy named after the classic yacht and an Aero is definitely rowdy.

Just purchased my RS Aero GBR 1459 in tip top condition, it's now going by the name of DangAEROus. More the nickname of the owner than hopefully the boat, arising from a dead run in my Laser on our narrow river and catching the fleet in front with nowhere to go managing to slow down by mounting the rear of an RS200; my only mistake it was our Commodore's, plus a few more events according to some!

No, I've never owned a Flying 11. I just liked the Italian word Andiamo (meaning Let's Go, or something similar). I do note that a lot of Italian restaurants use it too.

As it was Storm Dennis who curtailed 3193's maiden voyage by postponing the RS Aero UK Winter Champs at the Oxford Blue on the 15th Feb 2020, one of several winter storms to curtail sailing in the UK last month.

After a few unfortunate Black Flag starts last year, 3193 is fitted with 'No Fear' bow eyes to help see down the start transit on crowded start lines.

RS Aero Cherished Names
Lots more new names have been recorded since the last update in June!

Many RS Aero owners are coming up with some imaginative names for their beloved craft! The Name Register is for general interest and to make it possible, although not vital, to be original and avoid repetition.

It is time for a 6 monthly update of the name register and we are likely to have over 400 happy RS Aeros christened now! RS Aero owners can post the new names of their RS Aeros as a reply to this Forum Thread. Any new additions by Fri 6th Dec will be in time for the new December update. So get thinking up a name - your RS Aero deserves it!

Have acquired 1143, we came close to the edge travelling from Scotland to the Southampton area and back again to collect two boats (1143 and 2811), all within a 30 hour window including learning how to pack two Aeros onto an old Laser trailer that wasn't really suitable. Perhaps at my age I should know better so in homage to my love of Prog Rock, 'Close to the Edge' seems appropriate. GBR 1143 - 'Close to the Edge'

Oops! A spelling error in the name of GBR 1508. It should read Wahine, not Wahini and is pronounced Wah-hee-nay, meaning Hawaiian female (thanks to Marc Jacobi for his explanation and background in Hawaii itself.) The error was from spelling it as I heard it spoken by a Sydneysider! Any chance of a correction, Peter? Advance apologies to a very busy man . . .

My Aero is named "Sul Sea" (hence my screen name) which is a play on the musical instruction "Sul C" which means (in viola terms, an instrument I play occasionally) to play the given section of music on the C string. "Sul" means "on the" in italian, so the name sort of means "play on the sea" which I thought was pretty nice and is kind of the intention of me getting a boat.

I sail (not very competently yet) out of Hampton Sailing Club in Victoria, Australia with sail number AUS 2729

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and learning to sail in the BIG breeze, many boats have very aggressive names to match the conditions. In addition, there have been some aggressive and iconic movies filmed with this great windy city in the background. One such movie is know for its famous quotes which are now strategically placed on my boat's port and starboard bow; "Go ahead, make my day", and my favorite, "Do you feel lucky, punk?" Yes, you guessed it, I named my Boat Dirty Harry and in a crossing situation my competitors will all get a chuckle; the port boat wondering how lucky they feel and can they pass ahead?

Never named my boats before but since I have too much time in retirement (ex chemistry teacher) I gave GBR 2155 some thought and came up with 8-Methyl-N-vanillyl-trans-6-nonenamide.

However this isnt a very catchy boat name so how about the common name of this stuff, Capsaicin.

Its hot stuff - the active ingredient in chillies!

Mine is GBR 2932 - ' Spiny Norman' complete with Dinsdale the hedgehog. for those of you old enough will remember this from Monty pythons flying circus!

My NED 1869 is pink (tnx to Christer Bath), because i usually sail the (9) and the orange was already taken. A pink vehicle? Maybe it is my age, but the first one that comes to my mind is the "FAB1": the six wheeled car from Thunderbirds. Lady Penelope also has a boat: the "FAB2" and -not well known- also a four-person helijet: the "FAB3". Calling my Aero "FAB4" was of course out of the question for an obvious reason. So that's why my boat is the "FAB5"

My boat with sail number NED 1925 will be named as: "FlyingAero". It is a kind of tribute to the Flying Arrow a very popular open sail boat in the Netherlands. The production of this boat was stopped in 1990 due to the succes of upcoming popularity of the sailing board and the catamaran.

Hello,

my no. 1874 aero 7 shares his name with our other ships.

The name is "whakawhanaungatanga" which has it's roots in the maori language and means teamwork or cooperation between people of different age. For us it the result of a long search for a name. Also it is always nice to see how people try to get the letters together to the name, specially in the german language.

Have a nice sailing winter, in Berlin all boats are under cover and waiting for spring.

2000 - V-Jet The first aircraft that I remember flying on. Boeing 707 V-Jets were Qantas's main longhaul aircraft in the 1960s before the 747s came along. QF named theirs V-Jet and put it on their tails with the flying kangaroo. V was for Vannus, Latin for fan, as Qantas were the first to fit fan jets to their 707s. The more powerful engines were needed for the long distances that Qantas operated. They were the hot-rods of the skies in their day!

Greetings! With several thousands of flight hours as an aviator, I am naming my new RS Aero 9&7 "Aerostar" after a very sleek and fast six place twin aircraft produced and very popular here in the US that has always been much sought after. Remarkably quick and agile, the Aerostar was also very efficient in fulfilling its mission of moving its occupants rapidly from place to place. I have expectations that my Aero will also "deliver the goods" on speed and agility and be deserving of the description of being a "Star!" Aero 1594 has been sailed with much delight by me since July this year. Prior to that I sailed a Lightning368 for 5 years that I loved and thought I would never be parted from. However following an exceptionally windy week in Minorca with some fantastic coaching from Jamie & George I came home and ordered my Aero within a week; swiftly sold my Lightning368 - The Lady Archer, and so when it came to names "Holiday Romance" seemed entirely aptt!! Six months and still going strong!! I hope to make to Yorkshire Dales as many of the other venues are to far South for me, fantastic boat and another happy customer.

AUS 1189 has been named 'Kelpie'. After spending some quality time with my boat, camped on the shores of Green Lake (Horsham Victoria. AUS), in the evening sun and with a glorious 10 to 15 knot breeze from the south west, having invoked the Gods and Spirits of the Seas, Winds, Rivers & Lakes, I have named her 'Kelpie'.

And then there was the OK that I renamed 'Lorelei", great name for a big white boat. And my first dog was a much loved kelpie cross, quick and nimble. AUS 1203 - Aerosprey. I'm sailing at Safety Bay south of Perth, Western Australia. The name is a take on Osprey, a kind of sea eagle in our part of the world). So I hope Aerosprey will "fly" over the water! Am still trying to decide what sailing club to join and whether to compete at Sail Fremantle in October.

GBR 1157 Marleckin. -Lancashire/ northern expression for messing about or play fighting. Hence "Stop marleckin' '' heard more than once growing up. Sailing out of Poole Yacht club; a long way from home, but it beats Rishton Reservoir!

Of course from Seinfeld. I thought of Serenity Now and Airing of Grievances but they were better for multi-person crews. For a 56 year old who started single hander sailing six years ago in a Laser and with a goal of mastering sailing from zero to thirty knots, Feats of Strength seemed more appropriate.

GBR 1098 - Mercury.

Having bought my Aero a couple of years after my RS400, I was faced with 2 boats to name. I ummed and ahhed about it over the winter and finally settled on Mercury for the Aero and Gemini for the 400. Space geeks will no doubt get the reference, but for the rest of you Mercury was the name of the first American manned space program carrying a single astronaut, Gemini was the second program carrying, you've guessed it, 2 astronauts. If I ever get a sportsboat I'll have to name it Apollo and if I get a yacht I'll have to choose one of the shuttle names to stay consistent!

AUS 1194 - Tijuana Taxi

This is the sixth Tijuana since 1981,the fifth Tijuana Taxi. Living in Victoria on the border with New South Wales, we Victorians were often referred to as Mexicans during the 70'S, so Tijuana seemed appropriate, dad was always partial to Herb Albert so the name of one of his best known tracks fitted best.

The Barbarian Graphics came from Wild Graphics in Lymington after a bit of a hunt around the web to find the best colour combination to match the original Aero graphics.

Many new RS Aero owners are coming up with some fine imaginative names for their pride and joys. Simon Ward of Lymington had the great idea of forming a ‘name register’ so that names were not repeated. I suggest that everyone posts the names of their Aeros as a reply to this thread - minimum info is sail number and boat name (but feel free to tell the story if there is one!). You could also post a pic here if you have a nice graphic.

Periodically I shall update a concise list and save it to the documents page of this site.

So let your imagination go and post up those names!

[Please keep it clean-ish, there are minors here!]
