Stiff rudder in rudder stock
Thanks everyone for your input. As per Alan's suggestion, I've sanded the offending area a bit, seems to do the trick

Is there another Aero that you can swap rudders with. You will then be able to tell if your rudder or stock is faulty.

Clearly it shouldn't be that tight but I would not expect to be able to pull the rudder down with the rope - you want a 'good fit' so there is no 'wiggle' on the blade and rudder feels very positive.
Check rudder stock is not damaged or bent, clean out any sand or dirt. Finally if all looks good, just sand down rudder blade head a little.
Whilst there if you find the dagger board difficult to push down and up - check the trailing edge for pick up of rubber from the deck mounted rubber. Just clean it off with a bit of cleaner.

grattulation to your new Areo, very good decision.
This behaviour is not normal.
I had on a brand new rudder a similar issue. This was a production issue of the rudder (non constant thicknes) and replaced for free without any issue.
As your rudder is quite old, I would assume, that there is a different issue and not a production problem and for replacement it is also quite old. Maybe a wrong repair. Did you ask the pre owner regarding this?
Is the thickness of the rudder constant?
Is the rudder head deformed?

Hi everyone.
New Aero owner here, bought no. 1234 used.
My rudder is extremely stiff going down the last 20-30 degrees to the sailing position. There's no way I can pull it into position with the rudder downhaul. I tried loosening the screw in the rudder stock but it makes no difference (just means it won't stay 'up'). I can't even push it down the last bit with my hand or foot when it's in the water, so have resorted to attaching the rudder once on the water - what could possibly go wrong!!
I would assume this is not normal. Any suggestions??
