Length of tiller extension

Hi Cliff, Glad you've found a solution which works for you. In the end I took about three cms off the alloy tiller extension I had so that it matches the length of the carbon one measured by Peter in an earlier post. I've found it to be perfect and I no longer catch it on the mainsheet - yet it has proved long enough for me in both windy and light conditions. Hope that helps anyone else with a similar issue. David

Rudder pin to main sheet is 1650 cm. The tiller is 830 and the extension is 1120 meaning the extension can interfere with the mainsheet, I have replaced my extension with a telescopic one to provide more room.

Hi David,

Today I measured a recent;

- Tiller to be; 82cm (I am sure they are all the same, as is required)

- Carbon tiller extension to be 106cm (presume it is identical to the one you measured at 107cm)

- Ali tiller extension to be 110cm

I have used both extensions.

The 106cm one I have used most and is my preference currently. It can pass through the gap easily enough on tacks and I could get my weight adequately forward in the light winds at Oxford in the Winter Champs.

The 110cm one could still pass through the gap easily enough on the tacks but I did notice the small difference.

Hi David, I will double check the measurement of my carbon extension plus an aluminium one for you in the next couple of days and will report back.

My carbon one is just right for me. It just clears the mainsheet once you use a little tiller during a tack. I don't think it forces you use too much tiller, but the timing can take a little practice initially. This is a small inconvenience for the benefit of a light mainsheet load (by virtue of it being as far aft as possible).

I have heard of someone choosing to pass the extension around the back in tacks but I don't think that is necessary (he came from years in another boat in which that was the norm).

Hi. I have acquired an early Aero. On the second outing today I've noticed I catch the tiller extension in the mainsheet when I tack unless I push the tiller over more than 'normal' and wonder if mine is a few cms longer than normal (it may have been replaced), or I guess (less likely) the tiller is longer. Naturally I don't want to cut the extension if I just need more time to get used to it! The tiller extension tube is 107cm The tiller is a carbon one and 82cm long from the rudder stock join to the end. I'd appreciate a quick comparison with a new one so I know whether to get the hacksaw out or just go sailing more! Thanks David
