I recently attended a short course with West Country Boat Repairs on GRP Repairs. Excellent 4 - 5 hours spent with Pete Vincent and his team (Pete happens to be a member of our club). He has produced a booklet "GRP Repair Companion" published by Fernhurst Books. It is available online (Amazon, eBay etc) for under £10 and is probably a good investment if you are new to GRP repairs. Lots of great advice and tips. Pete (westcountryboatrepairs.co.uk) also sells repair kits which contain all the equipment and materials needed to undertake a proper repair.
Looking at your damage you will need to get rid of/cut out all the loose material so that you are back to sound and adhered gel coat & fibreglass. Don't be afraid to make it look much worse! It might then need a layer of fibreglass and resin before filling with gel coat - several layers with filler added before a final layer and a polish at the end. Best of luck.
I just had a similar issue, not a full hole throughout the hull but a big crack. Try to seal it with some gelcoat, two or three layers. Otherwise, I don't really know how can it be fixed without opening the hull :(( Good luck! Mario
Over the last couple of months I've been ill and not able to sail my Aero but I returned this weekend to the boatpark to find my boat had a hole in the side. It goes the whole way through the hull and certainly isn't sailable.
What would anyone's advice be on a repair? What sort of repairs are class legal, is this in need of a new hull or can it be repaired? If it can be repaired, should it be done by RS or anyone else?
Would appreciate some advice as this is the first repair to a boat I've had to do!
