Type and size of rivets for cleat at lower mast

Contacted them and they sorted me out - much better than the original solution!

Because you want a thin slightly stretchy line between the upper ceat and the lower. Otherwise as the mast bends and straightens you tend to pull it out of the top cleat and the sail drops a bit. Also don't want windage of a thicker rope. You should be able to have a knot (or splice) that goes easily thru the top of the mast.

Thanks, Matt - I will give them a call - still wondering why no-one uses a straight through length of the same diameter rope though - any ideas? Mike

Most of the sailors in our club (including me) use a spliced halyard instead of the OEM knotty version. The club chandlery (https://sandypointwatersports.com/) usually keeps a few in stock; I'm sure other suppliers have them as well.

Thanks for posting this - we've been wondering why the halyard is not holding and this could well be the issue.

As a 'newbie' to this... can I now ask the stupid question? And apologies if this has been asked and answered many times before, but I could not find it in the threads. Has anyone swapped the standard halyard set up for a continuous length of (e.g) 4mm rope? This would avoid the rigmarole of tugging the knot through the hole at the top of the mast and make it easier to cleat off. I am sure that there must be an obvious answer as to why this is not done but.....

Any advice much appreciated!

I will use a box column drill for the wholes. If There will be a damage, I would put Epoxid and for sealing Sikaflex in the whole.

Thank you Michael.

On a related subject, I get nervous drilling out rivets in carbon spars. I've done it and it's been successful but it scares me that I may cause some damage.

Are they any specific techniques recommended and / or should I just not be too worried about drilling when there's carbon around the rivet?

The rivets used for the attaching the cleat are 4.8 x 19.7 rivets - https://www.rssailingstore.com/Catalogue/Dinghy-Chandlery/RS-Fixings/Rivets/Carbon/Rivet-Carbon-48-x-197-FIX-R48-C18 - they are stainless steel rivets.

To help identify the fixings required we have put together some exploded diagrams which shows the fittings and the fixings required for each one: https://www.rssailingstore.com/Catalogue/RS-Parts/RS-Aero/Masts-Parts - in this diagram they are number 14 for the rivets and the cleat is number 24.

The cleat at the lower mast section for the main Halyard of our Aero is worn out.
It is fixed with rivets in the Carbon.

What type and size of rivets have to be used in Carbon?
Stainles Steel, Aluminium?
And what size ist the rivet, it seems to me 4 mm diameter (not sure), but what length?

Has anybody experience or specifiactions?
