Sam Whaley is a past RS Aero 7 World and UK National Champion and a member of the British Sailing Team. Sam has consistently been generous with advice and we always appreciate his input. Here he explains how brotherly rivalry and cooperation raised their game from an early age;
' Good Training Buddies
My top tip is to find someone with a similar mindset to consistently sail against. I grew up racing my brother Ben at Swanage Sailing Club. We both loved doing club racing and pushed each other really hard on the water for a good few years. It was wildly unpredictable and very tricky but we both worked together, without even realising it, and improved our sailing massively. In our case that brotherly rivalry really helped challenge and push us every single time we went out on the water and if we didn’t sail at our best we were mincemeat!
We consistently raced every week and that also helped. Don’t do a massive overload of sailing and then burn out but rather pace yourself and set realistic plans. We did Thursday, Saturday and Sunday racing against each other and the intensity of that just 3 times a week really helped propel my sailing in my Youth stages.
Helping someone else with their sailing can feel counterintuitive, but if you can get together a solid group that is committed and all share a common goal, then you can pretty much achieve anything. Teamwork is key whether there are two or ten of you.
